Struggle to get free

This flagellate is characterized by a teardrop shape, a short flagellum in front, and its rear end tapering off to a point. It usually moves by fluttering its body, but here it is caught on a particle and desperately writhes to get free.

Commentary by Prof. Yuji Tsukii, Hosei University
This organism is Phacus torta. It is closely-related to genus Euglena, but unlike Euglena, it has a hard, flat body and rarely changes shape.
